Newborn Sessions: A guide for new parents
Hello lovely parents! I’m here with some tips on how to prepare for your newborn photography session. Capturing these early moments is so special, and a little bit of prep and understanding of how I lead sessions, can make all the difference to how you feel and ultimately how our session may go.
Timing:
I will pencil in your due date and once your baby has chosen their birthday, we will schedule your session in (ideally) within the first 14 days after birth. The is usually the time when your baby will still be snuggly and sleepy - no one will know what time or day it is but that’s part of the joy of capturing your family in this new stage at home!
Comfort is Crucial:
Feed on demand: A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby. You may find that they will want more milk on the day of our session and this is completely normal!
Warm Environment: Keep the room nice and cosy - we can adjust it as needed.
Don’t worry about having to tidy/clean before your session! All we need is a clear bed/corner of the room - I am more than happy to roll my sleeves up and clear/move anything if needed. You’ve just had a baby, I do not expect to arrive to a showroom house!!
Prepare the Family:
Coordinate (not match) outfits: Think about the colours you have in your home - often simple, neutral colours for everyone works well. I will of course be on hand to help, and don’t forget there is always the client closet to use!
Focus on enjoying the moment rather than posing; my sessions are always child/baby-led so don’t worry about being on the clock or having to persuade little ones to sit still and smile at me! This is your time to spend soaking in your family. It can help to have an activity to do with your children such as puzzles or colouring etc.
Trust the Process
Newborn sessions require patience. Breaks for feeding and changing are normal and welcomed. Trust that we’ll capture beautiful moments of your family, no matter what. 🥰
I’ll leave it there for now! Booking a newborn session is a wonderful way to celebrate your new arrival and new family dynamic. Do reach out to ask any questions you may have and I hope to see you for your session soon!
Best Wishes,
Hannah x
