Family Session Outfit Ideas
Planning a family photo session is exciting, but deciding what to wear can sometimes feel overwhelming! These family photo sessions are all about capturing real moments, natural connections, and the joy of being together. The best outfit choices are ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourselves.
I hope this blog post will help you choose coordinated, comfortable outfits that suit the outdoor setting while letting your family’s personality shine.
1. Choose a Coordinated Colour Palette
Instead of matching outfits, aim for cohesive colours that complement each other. Here are some great colour schemes for outdoor sessions:
• Earthy Tones & Neutrals – Warm browns, beiges, soft greens, mustard, and rust look beautiful in natural settings.
• Soft Pastels – Blush pink, light blue, soft peach, and lavender create a gentle, timeless look.
• Cool & Natural Shades – Navy, deep green, and grey offer a classic and relaxed style.
For the best results, avoid bright neon colours, large logos, and heavy patterns, as they can be distracting in photos.
2. Dress for Comfort & Movement
Since my sessions are child-led and relaxed, I encourage movement, play, and exploration! Choose comfortable clothingthat allows for natural movement:
• Flowy dresses, skirts, or tunics create beautiful movement in photos.
• Soft, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen help keep everyone comfortable.
• Well-fitted but flexible outfits—chinos, jumpsuits, or loose tops and trousers all work well.
• Layering pieces like cardigans or shawls add warmth and texture if needed.
3. Outfit Ideas for Each Family Member
For Adults
• A maxi or midi dress, or a flowy skirt and top. Comfortable jeans/trousers and a chunky knit.
• Comfortable chinos, linen trousers, or dark jeans with a relaxed shirt, or top.
• A lightweight cardigan, jacket, or shawl for layering.
For Children
• Soft, natural fabrics—avoid anything stiff or restrictive.
• Dresses, dungarees, leggings, or simple tops work well.
• Shoes they can run in—barefoot is great for summer!
For Babies
• Simple rompers, bloomers, or knitted outfits.
• A light cardigan or knitted hat for some extra warmth
These are just suggestions—what’s most important is that everyone feels comfortable and themselves.
4. Consider the Season
The time of year plays a big role in outfit choices:
• Spring & Summer – Light fabrics, breathable materials, and soft or warm-toned colours.
• Autumn – Layered outfits with cosy textures like wool, flannel, and rich, earthy tones.
• Winter – Coats, chunky knits, scarves, and boots for warmth and texture.
5. Shoes Matter!
Since we’ll be outdoors, footwear should be comfortable and fit the setting:
• Leather sandals or bare feet for summer.
• Neutral boots or closed-toe shoes for cooler months.
• Avoid trainers with bright logos, as they can distract from the natural feel of the photos.
6. Keep Accessories Simple & Natural
Minimal accessories allow the focus to stay on your family’s connection. Consider:
• Delicate jewellery or simple accents rather than bold statement pieces.
• Natural hairstyles that move freely and aren’t too formal.
• Hats, bonnets, or scarves
7. What to Avoid
To keep your photos looking timeless and natural, try to avoid:
❌ Neon colours & large logos
❌ Busy patterns that clash
❌ Stiff, uncomfortable clothing
❌ Identical outfits (aim for coordinating instead!)

Final Thoughts: Be Yourselves!
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel good! The best family sessions happen when you feel relaxed, comfortable, and free to enjoy the moment. My child-led outdoor sessions focus on capturing genuine moments, so dress in a way that helps you move freely and have fun together.
If you need help choosing outfits before your session, I include more information in my client welcome guide, and will always be on the other end of emails/WhatsApp to bounce ideas off.
Looking forward to capturing your beautiful family soon.
